Are Argentina out of FIFA World Cup 2022? Lionel Messi fans have no reasons to lose hope yet
Argentina is still the betting favourite to win the FIFA World Cup in 2022, despite their 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia on November 22. Even if Saudi Arabia’s triumph is astounding, it has little impact on Argentina’s chances of taking the title.
Fans of Argentina can still harbour optimism since they recall how the reigning champions fell to Cameroon in their opening game in 1990. Diego Maradona’s Argentina reached the championship game that year.
The side led by Lionel Messi still has a chance to advance to the next round. Argentina’s chances are now considerably better considering that Mexico and Poland’s match finished in a scoreless tie. There will, however, be a number of restrictions. Let’s look at it.
Argentina defeats Mexico and Poland in their ensuing two games. Saudi Arabia loses the final two contests. In that scenario, Argentina would lead the group with six points, while Saudi Arabia would come in last with three. With four points apiece, Mexico and Poland will tie for second place. Argentina will be admitted to the round of 16.
Argentina triumphs in one of the final two games while losing the other. Lionel Messi would have little chance of qualifying with two losses because either Mexico or Poland (the team that defeated Argentina) will have four points and qualify. Even with a draw in one of the following two games, Saudi Arabia will probably advance to the next round.
One of the two remaining games is won by Argentina, and the other one is a draw. The team from Latin America will score four points. Saudi Arabia is held back for a draw along with Mexico or Poland (the team who drew with Argentina). The Saudis will also have four points if they lose their third game. The team that defeats Saudi Arabia will also probably have four points. In that scenario, the winner will be determined by goal differential.
Argentina loses both of its remaining two games. No matter what happens with the other teams, Messi’s chances of making the cut are probably slim to none.
Argentina will encounter more difficulties in its quest for a third World Cup victory if it finishes second in Group C. In the round of 16, it might most likely face the current champion France. It’s interesting to note that France defeated Argentina 4-3 in the round of 16 in Russia in 2018.
However, if Brazil wins their group and Argentina comes in second in Group C, the possibility of a Brazil-Argentina final—a matchup that millions of Indian fans have been waiting for—remains.
